Sara Pereira

Sara Pereira is Associate Professor with Habilitation (Post-doctorate title, “ Agregação” in Portuguese) at the Institute of Social Sciences of the University of Minho (Department of Communication Sciences) and a researcher at the Communication and Society Research Centre (CECS) of that university.

In 2020 she obtained her Habilitation in Communication Sciences and in 2004 she was awarded a PhD in Childhood Studies, specialisation in Media Education, by the University of Minho.

Her main research areas are children, young people and the media; children and young people’s rights to expression and participation; Media Literacy; media publics and practices. SHe has coordinated several national and European projects and has numerous publications on these issues. Currently, she is the Principal Investigator (PI) of the project bYOU- Study on children and young people’s experiences and expressions of the media”, funded by FCT FCT (PTDC/COM-OUT/3004/2020) and co-PI of the project “COMEDIG – Digital and Media Literacy Competences in Portugal”, funded by FCT (PTDC/CED-EDG/32560/2017). She is also a team member of the project “Verdad y ética en las redes sociales. Percepciones e influencias educativas en jóvenes usuarios de Twitter, Instagram y YouTube (Internética)”, funded by the 2019 call for projects I+D+i of the Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades (Spain) (PID2019-104689RB-I00).

She was head of the Communication Sciences Department from 2013 to 2019 and director of the Master’s in Communication, Citizenship and Communication from 2010 to 2015.

She has chaired the Media Education Research section of the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) since July 2019.

She is co-coordinator of MILOBS – Observatory on Media, Information and Literacy and co-author of the radio programme Ouvido Crítico [Critical Ear], broadcasted weekly on Antena 1 between February 2018 and December 2021.

She is a member of ECREA and IAMCR.
